Thursday Thought - Who are the Ungodly and what happens to them? (Jude 1)
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
Have you ever wondered what it means to be ungodly? Meaning, the opposite of godly? If so, but you don't know what it looks like, take a look at the New Testament book of Jude by clicking here, or reading below.
Jude 1:4 - "For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you." (The ungodly do their work in secret, clandestine ways sometimes)
Jude 1:4 - "They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immortality and deny Jesus Christ." (They pervert the grace of God by sinning anyway)
Jude 1:8 - "...these ungodly people pollute their own bodies, reject authority and heap abuse on celestial beings." (The ungodly have no rules for themselves and answer to nobody)
Jude 1:10 - "Yet these people slander whatever they do not understand, and the very things they do understand by instinct (as irrational animals do) will destroy them." (The ungodly are not open to learning the right way, a new way, or applying the known best way)
Jude 1:11 - "They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion." (These are all three examples of bad people in the Old Testament...Cain hated and killed his brother, Balaam was motivated by money, and Korah was so full of pride he led a revolt against Moses and Aaron and in doing so was openly questioning or rejecting God's appointed leadership.
Jude 1:12-13 - "These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm - shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted-twice dead. They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever. (The ungodly are all of these metaphors...and all are bad)
Jude 1:15 - "and to convict all of them of all the ungodly acts they have committed in their ungodliness, and of all the defiant words ungodly sinners have spoken against The Lord." (The ungodly commit acts of ungodliness and use words of ungodliness, all against God)
Jude 1:16 - "These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage." (The ungodly do what is just said...all of it is greedy and bad)
Jude 1:18 - "In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires." (The ungodly are selfish)
Jude 1:19 - "These are people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit." (The ungodly are divisive and do not have the Holy Spirit)
