Friday Devotional--Hope in the Dark
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
Hope in the Dark
"God is close, even when life feels impossible."
Psalm 34:18: "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
This week has been difficult for many in our community.
Too many families have experienced the pain of suicide, and many of us are asking questions that don't have easy answers.
I don't share this devotional with you today because I have all the answers.
I want to share this with you because I know where to look when I don't.
Today I want to remind us of one simple truth:
When life feels darkest, God has not moved away from us. He draws near to us.
Even God's people struggled
Sometimes we think strong faith means never feeling overwhelmed.
But Scripture tells a different story.
Elijah, after one of the greatest victories of his life, became so discouraged he prayed that he might die.
David wrote psalms filled with anguish.
Job questioned everything.
These were faithful people.
Their struggles did not mean God had abandoned them.
Mental and emotional suffering are not signs of weak faith.
They are reminders that we need God—and each other.
We are not meant to carry pain alone
Galatians 6:2: "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
One of the lies despair tells us is:
"No one would understand."
"I'm a burden."
"People would be better off without me."
Those are lies.
The church should be the safest place to say:
"I'm not okay."
We don't fix each other.
We sit with each other.
We pray.
We listen.
We help carry burdens until someone is strong enough to carry them again.
We Will Find Hope In Jesus
Our hope isn't simply that circumstances improve.
Our hope is Jesus.
Jesus understands grief.
Jesus understands rejection.
Jesus understands suffering.
And because He rose from the grave, darkness does not get the final word.
Romans 15:13 says: "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him..."
Notice that God doesn't just give hope.
He is the God of hope.
I'd like to ask everyone to do three simple things in the remainder of this week.
First, check on someone.
Don't just ask, "How are you?"
Ask, "How are you... really?"
Then listen.
Second, if you're struggling, tell someone.
Please don't fight alone.
There is no shame in asking for help.
Prayer and professional help can work together. God often works through doctors, counselors, pastors, family, and friends.
Third, remind people they matter.
You never know how much a simple text, phone call, hug, or conversation could mean.
I want to finish with Jesus' words in John 16:33: "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Today, if your heart is broken...
God is near.
If you're grieving...
God is near.
If you're exhausted...
God is near.
And if you feel like you have no hope left...
Let the people around you hold hope for you until you can see it again.
Prayer
Father, today we pray for every person carrying pain that others cannot see. We pray for families grieving the loss of loved ones, for those who feel overwhelmed, and for anyone wondering if life is worth living. Remind them that they are deeply loved, created in Your image, and never alone. Give us eyes to notice those who are hurting and courage to reach out. Surround us with Your peace, strengthen those who are weary, and help us to be a community that reflects the compassion of Christ. We place our hope in You because You are faithful, even in the darkest nights. In Jesus' name, Amen.
