Friday Devotional - Romans 10 - Why Israel Still Stands Responsible
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
The Core Problem: Willful Refusal. Israel’s issue was not ignorance, lack of access, or inability—it was refusal. They had: Passion for God, deep religious knowledge and commitment, and full exposure to the truth. Yet they chose not to submit.
- They pursued the wrong kind of righteousness
They tried to establish their own instead of accepting God’s. This wasn’t confusion—it was self-reliance over surrender. - They refused to submit to God’s way
God’s righteousness came through faith in Christ. Submission required humility—and they resisted it. - They had full access to the message
The gospel was clearly preached, widely heard, and fully understandable. This removes every excuse. - Their rejection was deliberate
Paul emphasizes that the problem was not “they couldn’t believe”—but they would not believe.
Examples in the Chapter
- Romans 10:18 “They have heard” → No lack of exposure
- Romans 10:19-20 “They understood” → No lack of clarity
- Romans 10:21 “All day long I have held out my hands” → God’s persistent invitation
In Summary
This paints a picture of active resistance, not passive ignorance. They are responsible because they had every opportunity to believe—yet consciously refused to submit to God’s righteousness. They chose pride over humility, works over faith, and control over surrender.
The big questions for each of us? We’ve heard, but do we understand? Do we have too much pride? Do we want control? Or are we willing to surrender?
