Friday Devotional - Romans 9 - Why Many Rejected Jesus
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
In Romans 9, we see a sobering reality: many of God’s people missed the very Messiah they were waiting for. Not because He was absent—but because their hearts were not ready to receive Him.
They were deeply religious. They knew the Law. They were zealous for God. And yet, they didn’t recognize Him. Why?
- They pursued righteousness—but tried to earn it. Instead of trusting God, they relied on their own effort.
- Beneath it was a subtle pride, a belief that they could establish their own goodness.
- He didn’t match their expectations. They wanted a conquering king—but He came as a suffering Savior, calling for repentance and faith.
- They trusted in the Law, in tradition, in their heritage—but not in Christ. Even though they heard the message, many refused to believe.
And yet, God’s plan continued. God’s plan was not thwarted. Through Israel’s rejection, the door was opened wide to the Gentiles. Mercy expanded. Grace overflowed. And Scripture reminds us that God is not finished—His story with Israel (and with us) continues.
Big Questions:
Are we trusting in what we do for God—or in what He has done for us?
Have we surrendered to Jesus as He is—or reshaped Him to fit our expectations?
Know that we are made right with God not by effort, tradition, denomination, or identity—It comes through faith in Jesus.
