Friday Devotional - The Power of Words

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31

Throughout my life I’ve witnessed the power of words…both in my own life and the lives of others. I’ve also seen both the good and the bad that come with it. I’m sure you can relate to that. Yes, words are powerful. And so, here’s a question: is there a right way to talk to people? If you had to teach someone how to talk around people, what would you tell them? I believe that what I’m going to share is the secret, and I believe it to be true when talking with anyone. It applies to all.
The answer is found in (Colossians 4:5-6). Here it is broken down in parts:
“Be wise in the way you act towards outsiders/others.” It’s important that we’re careful about how we do and say things. It’s important to have a thought-out plan. Wisdom comes from taking what you know to be true and then using it the right way.
“Make the most of every opportunity.” Every day we can change the trajectory of a person’s day. We have that kind of power. And we need to use that to our advantage.
“Let your conversations always be full of grace.” It’s a posture of humility and blessing.
“Seasoned with salt.” Consider what salt does. Salt brings flavor and enhances taste. In the same way we use salt in food, we’re to use our words to enhance those around us. Salt can also preserve the good.
“So that you may know how to answer each person.” Make it a way of life, Make it part of your DNA.
Our words have power. (Proverbs 18:21) says that “death and life are in the power of the tongue”. The same tongue that blesses and benefits one can devastate another if not careful. It’s important that we cover conversations in grace. Our words have too much power not to think before we speak. And if we do mess up, go ask for forgiveness quickly.
