We hear it all the time: “practice makes perfect.” Is this actually true? Maybe in some things, but in most things, it’s pretty difficult—if not impossible—to be perfect. Want to hear the good news? God doesn’t ask us to be perfect.

Like some of you reading this, a recurring New Year’s resolution for me is to read the Bible more. Not just on my phone or having the Bible app read to me, but physically reading out of my physical Bible. I find that the more I do this, or the more I “practice,” the hungrier for the Word I get. The more I read, the more I want to read. The less I read from the Word, the less I think about doing it on a daily basis.

I can’t expect to be perfect, and I shouldn’t get discouraged if I miss a day or two. Reading the Bible should be something we strive to do our best in, even if we aren’t perfect. Just make progress in your current Bible reading. Practice reading the Word daily. Joshua 1:8 is a great reminder of this. It reads, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Just make progress—don’t feel like you need to be perfect. Stay in the Word. It never comes back void. Isaiah 55:11 says, “So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
