Friday Devotional - Let Your Light Shine

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:14–16 (ESV)
It’s Our Identity
Jesus starts with identity: “You are the light of the world.” He doesn’t say try to be the light — He says you are. As believers, we reflect the light of Christ. Just as the moon reflects the sun, we shine because He lives in us.
When you walk into a dark room with a candle, the darkness doesn’t overpower the light. The light pushes back the darkness. That’s what you are called to do in a world that feels increasingly dark.
It’s Our Purpose
Light has two main purposes: to reveal and to guide. It exposes truth and helps people find their way. When Jesus tells us not to hide our light under a basket, He’s reminding us that our faith isn’t meant to be private or passive. We are meant to live boldly, to act in love, and to serve with compassion.
This doesn’t mean being loud or flashy. It means being consistent, kind, and Christ-like — in your family, workplace, school, and community. Your light may be the only gospel some people ever see.
You don’t need a platform, a microphone, or a title. You just need a willing heart and the courage to live differently.
Big Questions:
- Am I covering my light with fear, shame, or comfort?
- Who in my life needs the light of Christ that I carry?
Start small: a kind word, a listening ear, a selfless act. These are beams of light that point people to Jesus.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling us the light of the world. Help us to live in a way that reflects Your love, truth, and grace. Give us the boldness to uncover our light — not for our glory, but for Yours. Show us opportunities today to shine in dark places. May others see our good works and glorify You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
