In one of His final prayers before the cross, Jesus didn’t pray for miracles, buildings, or followers. He prayed for unity—that His people would be one. Why? Because a united team reflects the heart of God and becomes a powerful testimony to the world.

John 17:20-21 (NIV):  “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

Jesus knew that the strength of any group doesn’t come from talent or numbers alone—it comes from hearts aligned with each other and with Him. When we are unified, we can do far more together than we ever could alone.

A few thoughts:

  1. Unity is at the Heart of Jesus’ Mission - People see Jesus through our love for one another.
  2. Every Person Matters – Not made like clones—it’s made of people with different gifts working toward the same goal -each needed, each valuable.
  3. Unity Leads to Influence - “So that the world may believe.” The world doesn’t just hear our message—it sees it in how we treat each other.
  4. Unity Must Be Protected - Unity doesn’t happen by accident—it’s intentional. We must work through conflict, avoid gossip, and choose grace.

Big Questions:

  • Do I contribute to unity or division?
  • How can I better support and uplift those I work or serve with?

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for Your prayer for unity. Help us to reflect Your heart by living in unity with one another. Give us grace to forgive, patience to listen, and love that binds us together. Strengthen our teams, our churches, and our friendships to reflect Your glory. May we be so united that the world sees You through us. In Your name we pray, Amen.
