Monday Mission-Be a Shining Light
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
When I was a kid, one of my favorite songs was "This Little Light of Mine". Little did I know until recently the interesting history there was behind this song and that the original author of this song is unknown. The song was very much a popular source of comfort and encouragement for African Americans throughout the 1900's and during the Civil Rights Movement. One popular edit of the song was composed by Harry Dixon Loes in the 1920's, goes like this:
This little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine
Oh, this little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine
This little light of mine
I’m going to let it shine
Let it shine, all the time, let it shine
All around the neighborhood
I’m going to let it shine
All around the neighborhood
I’m going to let it shine
All around the neighborhood
I’m going to let it shine
Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m going to let it shine
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m going to let it shine
Hide it under a bushel? No!
I’m going to let it shine
Let it shine, all the time, let it shine.
Don’t let Satan [blow] it out!
I’m going to let it shine
Don’t let Satan [blow] it out!
I’m going to let it shine
Don’t let Satan [blow] it out!
I’m going to let it shine
Let it shine, all the time, let it shine
Hopefully this song brings back fond memories and a feeling of comfort and encouragement as it does me. More importantly, let this song be a reminder and a mission challenge this week to let your light shine! Look for ways to be God's shining light and example for all around your neighborhood. Do not let our light get hidden under a bushel or allow Satan to blow it out!
