Tuesday Truth - Significance of 40
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
The number 40 appears in the bible over 150 times. Each time it represents an impactful journey or experience. Sometimes the journey is 40 days, other journeys lasted 40 years! A couple examples are:
Genesis 7:4 - Rain for 40 days
Matthew 4:2 - Jesus fasts for 40 days
Exodus 24:18 - Moses remained on the mountain for 40 days
Numbers 14:34 - Israelites wander in the desert for 40 years
Acts 1:3 - Jesus appears for 40 days after his resurrection
While I'm not exactly sure why God determined 40 would be a significant number, I do believe the frequent use of 40 as a special time period is something we can learn from and adopt.
If you selected a habit to either start or stop (see yesterday's post), I would suggest you try it for the next 40 days. What could your journey look like from now until January 25? Pray that God will work in your life and give you the dedication to improve your habit for the next 40 days. I have a feeling that God will reveal himself to you as you focus on a habit that draws you closer to him rather than closer to something the world entices us with.
May your 40-day journey be one that God uses for your benefit and for his glory.
