Friday Devotional - Hiding Behind Your Inadequacies

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31

Burning Bush

Have you ever felt unsure of the direction or action God was calling you to take? Or maybe you knew exactly what you were supposed to do, but didn’t have the guts to see it through? Even Moses, one of the Heroes of Faith talked about in Hebrews had this self-doubt, hiding behind what he thought were his inadequacies.

We see in Exodus 3 and Exodus 4 God calling Moses to head back to Egypt to help liberate his people from Pharaoh. God performs many miracles (Burning Bush, Staff to Snake, Leprous Hand healed) but each time Moses doubts himself, what he is capable of and asks God to send someone else. Even with very clear and direct steps, along with the power of God being displayed before him Moses shies away saying things like “what if they don’t believe me”, “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue” or “Please send someone else”.

For me, three key takeaways from this larger story:

  1. Doubt in ourselves is often blinding us from the power of God before us
  2. We too easily hide behind our perceived inadequacies
  3. Even when we finally take the leap of faith it may be years, took Moses 40 years of wandering before they reached the Promised Land. Don’t expect results and confirmation immediately.

Challenge / Application:

Look past your perceived short comings, rely on the Power of God.

Focus more on what God can do through you than what you would do on your own.
