The Power of Fasting and Prayer
One of the best ways to realize the power of God in your life is when you come to Him in fasting and prayer. The practice of fasting is all throughout Scripture in both the Old and New Testaments. Fasting is a love offering to God, and when combined with focused prayer it is an excellent example of living by faith and not sight or our feelings. Fasting is NOT punishment from God, manipulation, or a way to diet.
Some examples of why we are called to fast is to mourn over sin (Ezra 10:6-17), breaking strongholds (Matthew 17:21 and Mark 9:28-29), for God’s direction (Acts 13:2, 14:23), and for safety of other people (Esther 4:15-17). The Bible teaches us about 1-day fasting (Judges 20:26), 3-day fasting (Esther 4:16, acts 9:9), 7-day fasting (1 Samuel 31:13), 10-day fasting (Daniel 1:12), 14-day fasting (Acts 27:33-34), 21-day fasting (Daniel 10:3), and of course 40-day fasting (Luke 9:28).
If you’re wondering “where are you today God?”, or “God, what is Your will for my life?”, or even “God, can you help me break free from this sin or addiction or distraction?”, perhaps the best way is to start by fasting and prayer. The Bible instructs us clearly on how it is a strong way to connect with God and understand His will and plan for us.
