So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

Friday Devotional

We enjoyed devotions led by Ryan, our Chief Administrative Officer. This is a summary of our devotional time together. We pray you're blessed by his message just as we were.

Last year I had shared a devotional on the 40’s of the Bible and how they all represented challenges and difficulties for those going through the period of 40. Today we dug into one of those “40” stories, that of Goliath taunting the armies of Israel for 40 days, demeaning them and our God.  David enters on Day 41 and slays Goliath and leads Israel to victory over the Philistines.  Louie Giglio has written a book titled “Goliath Must Fall” about this story of David.  It outlines 5 Giants in our lives that must be challenged and not be allowed to control us and our lives:

  1. Fear
  2. Rejection
  3. Comfort
  4. Anger
  5. Addiction

Louie provide 3 interesting “Twists” or ways to apply this Biblical challenge to our lives.

  1. We may have thought of this story and put ourselves in the role of David.  How God equips us with the tools or weapons we need to defeat these giants in our lives.  Louie challenges us that Jesus is in the role of David.  How he has defeated these giants in our lives on the cross and continues to be our Savior and Deliverer over the sin and giants in our lives.  It’s not about us, it is about Jesus.
  2. Our giant is already dead.  Jesus has already defeated the sin and giants in our lives with his work on the cross.  We can call on that promise, even though the effects of sin and these giants still plague us in our lives.  Jesus will return and set all things anew for our eternity, but He has already won the battle and we can claim that and rely on Him to defeat our giants as we wait his second coming.  It’s not about us, it is about Jesus.
  3. David’s motivation was to bring glory to God and show his power and to show the world that Israel’s God was the one true God.  Not about David and his glory, but the glory of God.  It’s not about us, it is about Jesus.  Read 1 Samuel 17:45-47 to hear David’s response to Goliath’s taunts.
