Friday Devotional – It’s That Simple
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
Today we’re looking at the story of Nicodemus found in John 3:1-15. It’s the story that finds Jesus telling Nicodemus, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” What did he mean by, born again? Did he mean that we needed to be go back into our mother’s womb and be reborn? No, he didn’t. Instead, Jesus was referring to the rebirth of our spirit. That our spirit needed to be reborn. When God first created people, He created us to be a three-dimensional being. He created us to be body, mind and spirit. It is in the spiritual dimension that people can know God and fellowship with Him. The problem is, that the spirit part has been destroyed by sin. So Jesus was basically saying to Nicodemus, that his body was alive, but his spirit was dead. And that If he wants to see the kingdom of heaven, then he must have a spiritual birth. Jesus says the same to all of us today.
So how can one have a spiritual birth? We need to believe. Jesus then said in John 3:14-15, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert (which was symbolic for the crucifixion for sins), so the Son of man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life.” Jesus had to be lifted up on the cross for us. He needed to die for our sins, so that we can have a spiritual birth, or be born again. The sin that brought death to the spirit before, will now be forgiven. Which gives all who believe in Jesus a new spiritual birth. A new life and fellowship with God. It’s truly that simple. John 3:16 then says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Praise be to God.
