Friday Devotional - The Promise of Overcoming Temptation
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
This promise has always been difficult for me claim or find victory in. I just always seem to give in to the enemy. Yes, I know that even though I’m a believer, I’m still a sinner. But it just seems like I can do better. Even the apostle Paul said when he was fighting temptation in Romans 7:15, “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do, but what I hate, I do.”
But there has to be more to it. God promises the overcoming of temptation to all who believe and follow Jesus. James 4:7 says, "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." So the idea is to Submit and resist…then the devil will flee. That temptation will go away. The word submit means, to line up under. Resist means, to set yourself against. This is stronger language than just hoping we don’t sin. God wants us to line up under Him, be confident and claim His promise that we can win. To set ourselves under Him and fight! To make a stand under God and not bring it weak.
Other ways to overcome temptation found in Scripture:
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 Recognize the spiritual battle that’s happening
Ephesians 6:4 Put on the armor of God
Matthew 6:13 Pray and ask God for help
2 Timothy 2:25-26 Repent and acknowledge truth
Matthew 4:1-11 Using God’s Word
James 4:7 Submit and resist
Ephesians 6:10 Be Strong and fight
May we all grab hold of the One who can conquer sin in our lives.
