Thursday Thought- What makes Jesus beautiful?

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

I heard this song recently, and when I listened to the lyrics...I thought "How can this be beautiful?" The song is using Scripture references to describe what Jesus looks like according to the book of Revelation (Rev 19:12-15 Eyes like flames of fire, Rev 1:14 Head is white as wool, Rev 12:2 Voice that sounds like rushing waters) and then the chorus is "Jesus, You're Beautiful."

Have you ever thought of what it would be like to walk down a street one day and a person steps out of an automobile and they turn to you and have eyes that are flames of fire, head so bright white that it's blinding, and when speaking sounds like the loudest rushing waterfall you could imagine? I mean, that sounds like it could be terrifying!

But when looking into this idea of Jesus as beautiful, you have to look at beauty not in the sense as we think of it in the world...things like smiles, or nature, or physical attributes. Rather, think of beauty as actions taken. It's beautiful to see somebody help an elderly person. It's beautiful to see a child hug their parent after being apart from them for a long time. It's beautiful to see people loving God and loving others. Those are actions, not visual queues. In that sense, when you think of what Jesus has done for all humankind by paying the price for our sins so we can have salvation and eternal life it is the most clear picture of beauty you could imagine.

Additionally there is Scripture that helps us know that in general Jesus is beautiful. See Psalm 27:4 and Isaiah 33:17.

So it is true that when we see Jesus, He is going to have eyes of flames...head white as wool...and voice like raging, rushing waters. But it won't be scary or terrifying. It will be beautiful because in that moment He will greet us children of God (John 1:12-13). And, because the Bible has told us what He will look like it will not be a surprise. It will be a time for rejoicing! I actually believe that for believers in Christ Jesus, we will have peace in that moment because that is a fruit of the spirit given to us when we believe. So we don't need to worry that we might be scared...God gives us peace!

Praise God!
