Thursday Thought- Can a person "See God" when looking at natural beauty?

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31

Moon

I've heard people say "I could really see God in that sunrise today", or "When I look at these beautiful flowers it reminds me of God." What does that mean? Do they actually see the face of God in these things? Do they get visions of an Almighty God when they watch the waves crash on a beach? I don't totally know and I don't claim to know what the "right answer" is, if there is one.

However, I can look at Scripture in the Bible and say that there are verses that would lead me to believe that a human being not only CAN see God in natural things, but that all mankind SHOULD see God in them.

One verse came to me recently when a friend said he saw the most stunning full moon, and he felt that it looked completely out of the ordinary. It was in the Bible, the book of Romans, chapter 1, verse 20.

  • "20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse." Romans 1:20. This verse is saying that in the things that have been made (nature, natural beauty), God's eternal power and divine nature have been on display. And this would mean (according to the book Genesis, chapter 1) that since the beginning of all mankind these things have been on display. It's talking about the trees, the animals, other humans, the bugs, the bodies of water...all of it. And because it is all there plain for us to see, we HAVE NO EXCUSE but to see God when we see these things!

Another verse I think of is in Isaiah chapter 40, verses 25-26.

  • 25 “To whom will you compare me? Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. Isaiah 40:25-26. This is saying to just look up tonight and look at the stars or the moon. God created all of that and knows each one by name! He wants us to be amazed by Him.
