Friday Devotional- "Mene, Tekel, Peres"
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
For devotions this morning let's look at an amazing story in Daniel 5.
It’s the story of Belshazzar, the grandson of King Nebuchadnezzar, and the huge party he threw. Over a thousand men, who brought wives and concubines with them, attended. It was the party of all parties. They even brought out the sacred golden goblets from the temple in Jerusalem to use for their wine. But, Belshazzar and his guests had taken it too far, so God intervened.
Out of nowhere the party was interrupted by the appearance of God's finger writing something on the palace wall. No one but Daniel was able to interpret what it said. (Read it here)
The three things God inscribed on the palace wall still apply to us today:
- “MENE, GOD HAS NUMBERED YOUR KINGDOM.” God has numbered our days as well. We don't know when our last breath will be taken.
- “TEKEL, YOU HAVE BEEN WEIGHED IN THE BALANCES.” Our lives will be weighed in the balances too. The balances of our “right” and “wrong”, but also the balances of our righteousness against the righteousness of Jesus. Only through Jesus can we be declared “Not guilty”.
- “PERES, YOUR KINGDOM WILL BE GIVEN OVER AND DIVIDED.” That very same night Belshazzar was slain. We may plan for our future, but if we don’t include God in those plans we are heading down a dangerous road.
One day our name will for sure be called, no doubt about it. May we each be weighed out as righteous, as not guilty.
And, may we be granted entrance into heaven through the saving grace of our Lord Jesus.
