We’ve been slowly walking through the Book of Psalms, and this week we’re looking at (Psalm 38). The Psalms do such a great job of talking about the topics and emotions we most often deal with in life.

There’s so much in this chapter, like always. Each verse is full of wisdom we can soak in, use, and grab hold of daily.

What stood out to me in the passage is found in verse 1. It says, “Oh Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger or discipline me in your wrath.” It’s the whole idea of being scolded, punished, embarrassed and/or shamed. It’s not fun, no one likes it. I never did as a child…and I still don’t.

Let’s see if we can relate to anything that this passage talks about…

What is David feeling? He’s feeling disciplined by God (Vs 3). David knows he’s guilty (Vs 4) and has been a fool (Vs 5). He can’t take it anymore (Vs 7-8).

His wounds fester (Vs 5)

He’s in pain (Vs 7)

He’s depressed (Vs 8)

His heart and eyes are failing (Vs 10)

He has so much pain (Vs 9)

His friends have abandoned him (Vs 11)

His enemies are plotting against him (Vs 12, 20)

He has no strength left (Vs 13-14) HE FEELS A WEIGHT ON HIM

What does David do about it? In agony, he’s confessing to the Lord (Vs 15). David freely admits his sin and his remorse (Vs 18, 22). He believes God’s mercy is the only thing that can save him (Vs 21)

What should we do when we have similar thigs happening? May we each go to the Lord quickly then with our sin, confessing, and then move forward serving and loving God and others.

God is merciful to forgive us (I John 1:9)

God is willing to heal us (James 5:16)

God will never shame us (Romans 10:9, Romans 10:11)
