Friday Devotional - What is Faith?
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
What is Faith?
The definition of faith is “complete trust or confidence in someone or something.”
We put our trust in a lot of things, one example being airplanes/pilots. We trust them completely to do what
they say that they can do… and I’ve never once asked a pilot if I can help him do his job of flying the plane
better. I have faith that he will do what he says he can do.
So what does the Bible say that faith is?
Hebrews 11:1 says “Now faith is confidence in what we hope and assurance about what we do not see.”
Do you ever find it hard to have faith? Honestly, there are times when I do think it’s hard to have faith in
who God says He is and what He promises that He can do. It’s not that I don’t trust Him – just that my
human nature and my tendency to “put God in a box that I can understand” limits my ability to have
confidence and assurance that God is ALWAYS good and ALWAYS keeps His promises.
I’m a details gal – I want to know how everything will come together, ensure that nothing too small is
forgotten about. But again, this tendency works against me in my desire to have full confidence in a God
that I cannot see and cannot ask questions/get direct answers.
But… the thought that kept coming back to me is “Do I put my faith in God in the same complete way that I
put my faith in that pilot when I get on an airplane?”
I don’t need to know how all the dials, buttons and mechanics of a plane work to trust that the pilot will get
me safely from Point A to Point B. And just like that, I don’t need all of the details of God and how He will
work all things out for His good. I can still be confident and assured in who God says He is:
• I am the first and I am the last; apart from me, there is no God – Isaiah 44:6
• God is light; in him there is no darkness at all – 1 John 1:5
• God is love – 1 John 4:8
• How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you – 2 Samuel 7:22
• Taste and see that the Lord is good – Psalm 34:8
• You, Lord, are forgiving and good; abounding in love to all who call to you – Psalm 86:5
• The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves – Zephaniah 3:17
That is the God that I and we put our faith in, have confidence and assurance in. Amen!
