Thursday Thoughts - Longest Chapter in the Bible
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
The longest chapter of the Bible is Psalm 119 with 176 verses. The Psalm is also special due to how it is constructed: comprised of 22 stanzas, with each one starting with the next letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Additionally, each stanza has 8 verses with 2 lines each.
I find this to be an incredible chapter and very worthy of the title, "Longest Chapter in the Bible," as it is a celebration of God's word and instruction to His people. During times where I am struggling to get in the word, I do turn to this Psalm. I do not always go through it all in one sitting, but it gets me refocused on how amazing it is that we have God's written word. Often we think of laws as something to restrain or punish us, but God's law is for our good, our protection, and will lead to a more joyful life - it is to be celebrated! Many times the author mentions a delight in God's law, below is one stanza but I encourage you to read this chapter and to return to if often.
מ Mem
97 Oh, how I love your law!
I meditate on it all day long.
98 Your commands are always with me
and make me wiser than my enemies.
99 I have more insight than all my teachers,
for I meditate on your statutes.
100 I have more understanding than the elders,
for I obey your precepts.
101 I have kept my feet from every evil path
so that I might obey your word.
102 I have not departed from your laws,
for you yourself have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.
