There are some phrases that we hear all the time: Believe in yourself. Trust yourself. Follow your heart. These are all great sayings and can be a good pick-me-up statement or motivational quote to start your day.

However, as Christians, we should really be saying Believe in God, so I can believe in myself. Trust in God so that I can trust myself, and follow God so that I follow the right things. Without God, we are nothing. Without His son and His commandments, we would not have an example to live by and follow. John 14:6 says “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

God is the one we need to seek first, not ourselves. He is the way. It is good to think for ourselves and stay true to what we believe. We need to make sure, however, that our values and beliefs stem from God and His word before anything else.
