Friday Devotional – Ever Present Helper
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
We’ve been slowly walking through the Book of Psalms, and this week we’re looking at (Psalm 46). The Psalms do such a great job of talking about the topics and emotions we most often deal with in life.
There’s so much in this chapter, each verse is full of wisdom we can soak in, use, and grab hold of daily. For example, this chapter talks about 3 things God is, 4 times we don’t have to fear, and 3 different works of God.
What stood out to me though was a verse I remember from my youth. My pastor use to talk about this often…or at least it stood out to me. Psalm 46:1-2a says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear.” This Psalm is true for us today. God is our refuge and strength, our safe place, the place to go when we’re afraid. God is ever-present.
Jesus teaches the same truths in Acts when He promises an ever-present Helper. The Spirit will live in, around, and flow out of all believers. Because of this, God is always near, He’s taken up residence in our lives, and an ever-present helper. Once we are saved and give our life to Christ, the Holy Spirit takes up residence in our lives forever, sealing us as His. He will never leave us or forsake us. We have the promise of presence and power.
The Holy Spirit:
- Reveals Truth to us. It enables us to understand and interpret God’s Word. (John 14:25-26)
- Convicts us of sin. (John 16:7-11)
- Indwells in us (Eph 1:14)
- Leads and guides us. (Acts 16:6-10)
- Empowers us. (Eph 5:18-21)
- Gives us Gifts. We are all given gifts to enhance the body of Christ…our fellow believers and to the world (1 Cor 12:1-31)
- Produces fruit in us. The fruits of the Spirit. The Spirit’s presence in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23)
May we each claim, hold on to, and take comfort in our ever-present Helper.
