Have you ever witnessed a dog pant so hard you could hear it and see it? Have you ever experienced that kind of thirst yourself? That’s the kind of thirst our passage in (Psalm 42) talks about today. It’s written as an intense desire and overwhelming sense of want. It gives the idea of not being able to live without it. Psalm 42:1-2 talk specifically about having a thirst for God.

Having this kind of thirst made me think, what else does the Bible tell us to thirst for? Here’s 5 things God wants us to thirst for:

  1. The Living God (Vs 2; 63:1; 143:6). That we would seek and find it. That we would find a relationship with God.
  2. Salvation (Jn 4:14; 6:35; Rev 22:17; Isa 55:1-3). For ourselves initially, but then thirst for the salvation of others.
  3. Righteousness (Mt 5:6). That we would continue to grow in our faith. Made right with God.
  4. Wisdom and Knowledge (Pr 2:1-11). Doesn’t mean we have all the answers, but that we would grow in even finding answers. That we would pursue it and find it when needed.
  5. The flowing of the Holy Spirit (Jn 7:37-39). That we would take action and see the Holy Spirit work through us and others.

The Psalms do such a great job of talking about the topics and emotions we most often deal with in life. There’s also so many things that will challenge us as we live life. Not to make us feel guilty, but to inspire us as we move forward. We quickly see that each verse is full of the wisdom we can soak in, use, and grab hold of daily. May we each long for and thirst for Spiritual growth. Better yet, may we each be able to quench that thirst as we experience them in our lives.
