So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

What's Your Purpose?

In my lifetime, I’ve often wondered what my purpose is. Have you ever wondered what yours is?

We’ve been slowly walking through the Book of Psalms, and this week (Psalm 57) makes us look a little closer at purpose. In this passage you can find 4 requests of David, 10 reasons for an answer, and 7 resolves to praise God about.

What stood out to me in this passage though, while King Saul is still out to kill David, David is still hiding out, and David is still taking refuge in God…David writes: Psalm 57:2, “I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.” In the midst of all this danger and uncertainty, David still looks to God for purpose.

Notice that it doesn’t say, God fulfills MY purpose for me. God never promises to fulfill YOUR/OUR/MY purpose. I know from experience that my plans, my purposes, may end up being wrong.

But God’s purposes are perfect…and He does have a purpose for all of His people. The question is, what is it? What are they? And where do I find it/them?

The Word of God is the place to find purpose:

  1. God wants us to be like Jesus (Romans 8:29).
  2. God wants us to make Jesus our joy and treasure (Matt 13:44-46).
  3. God wants us to be set apart, different, not like the world (Romans 12:2).
  4. God wants us to be ambassadors for Him, encouraging those who don’t know Jesus (2 Cor 5:20).
  5. God wants us to stir up those who do know Jesus to love and serve others. To do good (Hebrews 10:24-25).
  6. God wants us to be forgivers (Matt 18:21-22).

I could go on and on. God has many common purposes for believers, and He’s working them out in each of us. What is God’s purpose for you?

The purpose I’ve claimed in my life, and I use it as a life statement, is “To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” I want to glorify God in all I do and have fun, joy, and meaning while I do it. I pray the same for all of us.
