Thursday Thoughts - Many Good Choices
So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
I will never forget sitting in one of my senior business classes at Dordt College. The professor was talking about how sometimes God presents you with a multitude of choices and none of them are the “right” or “wrong” choice.
He used this illustration:
“If one of you would come to me and say, ‘professor, I don’t know who to date. I would like to find a wife for myself, I just don’t know who to choose. There are so many options!’ The first question I would ask you is how many women do you know that attend church and are active in their church. Let’s say 10. Now out of those 10 women how many live out Proverbs 31 and are actively using the talents and gifts God has given them to be a faithful servant. Let’s say that leaves you with 5 women. Next, I would ask, well how many women are interest in dating you? Let’s say that leaves you with 2. Which girl should you pick? Pick the prettier one! God doesn’t want to ruin your fun; He just wants you to be obedient to his scripture and serve him well. So, if both these women have the potential to be faithful, God-fearing, servant-hearted wives one day, then just pick the prettier one!”
So often we can get tied into this idea that one path is right, and the other is wrong. In some cases that is true, there is a path of obedience and a path of disobedience, and it is sinful to choose the path of disobedience. However often we can be faced with multiple good choices and there is no “wrong choice”. God might present you with 2 job opportunities where both jobs would allow you to serve God faithfully and utilize the gifts and talents He has given you. There is no wrong choice – chose what interests you!
To be clear, this is NOT to say “God wants you to be happy so do what makes you happy.” No! God calls you to live in obedience and worship. However, you might find that you can be obedient and worship in a multitude of different options and choices. So then chose the one that you are passionate and excited about - "the prettier one". God gave you passions and desires for a reason! Don’t let indecision over 2 good choices cause you fear or worry. Move forward in confidence that whichever path you take – if you are obedient to God and serve him faithfully – you will find blessings.
